Frequently asked questions
What DiskJoy removes, what it never touches, and how to get the space back.
Safety
Does DiskJoy delete anything automatically?
No. DiskJoy only lists what it finds. Items move to the Trash after you confirm the full list, and nothing is permanently deleted until you empty the Trash.
Can I undo a cleanup?
Yes, until you empty the Trash. Open the Trash in Finder and choose Put Back. History in DiskJoy shows which operations still have items in the Trash.
Is it safe to delete caches?
Caches are temporary data that apps rebuild when needed. After removal an app may load a little slower the first time. DiskJoy explains the effect for each item and leaves items where the effect is less clear unselected. Read the guide to ~/Library/Caches.
Why are large files never preselected?
Size alone doesn’t tell whether a file is still needed. DiskJoy lists large and old files with their age and location so you can decide yourself.
Privacy and permissions
Does DiskJoy upload my files or file list?
No. Scans run on your Mac and DiskJoy doesn’t need an account.
Why does DiskJoy ask for Full Disk Access?
macOS protects locations such as Mail and Safari data. Without Full Disk Access, DiskJoy skips them and marks them as “Not scanned”. You can use DiskJoy with limited access and turn on Full Disk Access later in System Settings › Privacy & Security.
Using DiskJoy
Why didn’t my free space go up after a cleanup?
Files in the Trash still take up space on your disk. The space comes back when you empty the Trash. DiskJoy shows “Moved to Trash” and “Space freed” separately for this reason. Read more.
Can I keep some folders out of scans?
Yes. Choose Exclude from Scans on any item, or add folders and files in Settings. Excluded items are never scanned, counted or suggested for removal.
Does DiskJoy scan in the background?
No. You can turn on a weekly or monthly reminder, which is a notification only. DiskJoy never scans or removes anything on its own.
What DiskJoy finds
What are leftovers?
Data that apps you already deleted left in your Library folder. DiskJoy marks each item as a Confirmed match when the app identifier matches, or a Possible match when only the name matches. Possible matches are not preselected.
How does DiskJoy find duplicates?
It compares file contents, not names. One copy in each group is always kept, and you choose which one.
Will cleaning developer files break my projects?
DiskJoy lists only data that can be recreated, such as Xcode DerivedData, package caches and node_modules, and never lists source code. Each group says what happens after removal, for example that the next build takes longer.
